Compton To Tour Fire Station, Emergency
Center
Council faces decision on whether Fire
Facilities proposal will go to ballot
WHAT: Seattle City
Councilmember Jim Compton will tour the Seattle Emergency Operations Center and
Fire Station No. 2, two facilities that are due for new construction and major
renovation in a proposed Fire Facilities package being considered by the
Council.
"The state of our fire facilities is, frankly,
embarrassing," said Compton, who chairs the Council’s Police, Fire,
Courts & Technology Committee. "In the post-9/11 era, we must be
focused on emergency preparedness."
The Council has scheduled a Committee of the Whole meeting
for Monday, June 23 at 2:30 p.m. to consider legislation that would put fire
station construction and renovation on the ballot this November.
Compton says that Fire Station No. 2, Seattle’s oldest
fire station at 85 years old, is a good example of an existing emergency
response facility that does not fit with the technology of the times. The City’s
Emergency Operations Center, which is Seattle’s communications lifeline during
a citywide emergency, is housed adjacent to the fire station. Compton would like
to see a new operations center constructed elsewhere.
WHEN: Thursday,
June 19, 2003
Noon to 1 p.m.
WHERE: Fire Station No. 2
