Nickels Releases Report Showing $220 Million City Investment In Neighborhoods
City ensuring neighborhood plans are implemented

SEATTLE - Mayor Greg Nickels today released a report by Seattle's Department of Neighborhoods (DON) that shows the city has invested $220 million in neighborhood-requested improvements since mid 2000, and is forging ahead with more investments.

"We're working hard to deliver on the vision people have for their neighborhoods," said Nickels. "We're investing our public dollars and forging partnerships to continue making a difference in revitalizing our communities."

The report, submitted as part of an accountability agreement between the mayor and DON Director Yvonne Sanchez, shows the city has invested about $55 million per year since 2000, including an expected $55 million this year, to carry out improvements requested by citizens in 38 neighborhood plans. The plans were created between 1995 and 1999, and reflect months of work by community members who volunteered to lay out a vision for each of the participating neighborhoods.

In addition to the public investment, neighborhoods have received $11 million worth of community volunteer work, donations from foundations and developers, and volunteer participation of non-city government agencies.

The plans have a twenty-year implementation timeline.

"We have sixteen years to go; and yet, we are moving quickly, accomplishing a great deal during the last four years," said Sanchez. "Working together, neighbors and government are making significant investments in our city's future."
