Mayor Nickels Announces Nomination of
New City Light Superintendent
"Outstanding candidate," says chair of selection committee

SEATTLE - Mayor Greg Nickels today announced he has nominated veteran corporate and public sector utilities leader Jorge Carrasco for superintendent of Seattle City Light. Nickels selected Carrasco after an extensive 7-month nationwide search.

Carrasco is a seasoned chief executive with diverse utility experience.

"Jorge is a superb public manager and leader," said Nickels. "City Light is a treasured institution in our city and a critical asset to Seattle's economy. With his strong commitment to the environment and his proven leadership in the utilities industry, Jorge will help build the foundation for City Light's next century of public service."

Carrasco has almost 30 years of experience leading corporate utility companies and municipal utility providers. During his career, he has helped those organizations enhance financial performance, achieve growth and diversification and manage challenges due to economic fluctuations. He most recently served as president of New Jersey-based American Water Services, a $424 million (annual revenue) subsidiary of American Water that provides water, wastewater and related services to several major cities and industries in the U.S. and Canada and to the federal government. Carrasco was previously general manager of East Bay Municipal Utility District, a water and wastewater utility serving more than one million customers in Oakland, Berkeley and the eastern San Francisco Bay area.

He also served as city manager of Scottsdale, Arizona and Austin, Texas. As city manager of Austin he had oversight of an electric utility comparable in size to City Light. Carrasco also served as superintendent of Administration in Austin's electric utility, where he was in charge of managing rates, regulation, financial planning and human resources.

"The Mayor's made an outstanding selection," said Randy Revelle, chair of the selection committee and former Seattle City Council member who headed the Council's energy committee. "We conducted a very thorough search and I hope Jorge's confirmation goes well before the City Council."

"Seattle City Light is a progressive organization highly regarded in the power industry," said Carrasco. "City Light and the City of Seattle embody values that are important to me, such as environmental protection, innovation and a commitment to public power. I look forward to the chance to work with the highly qualified men and women who deliver outstanding public service at City Light every day," he added.
