PUBLIC HEARING ON FAMILIES AND EDUCATION LEVY
May 19 hearing at City Hall will vet Mayor's proposal, set stage for Council amendments

SEATTLE - The Seattle City Council will hold a public hearing at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 19 in Council Chambers on the Mayor's proposal for a new Families and Education Levy. If approved by the Council, the levy to assist families of school-aged children would appear on the September 14, 2004 primary election ballot.

The proposed 2004 levy package was developed over the past two years by a 42-member Citizens Advisory Committee, a seven-member Levy Oversight Committee and the Mayor's Office. The Council has held two Committee of the Whole meetings to discuss the Mayor's proposal and will continue discussions after next week's public hearing. A committee vote on the package is expected on June 30, with a final Council vote on July 6.

"The Families and Education Levy is one of Seattle's legacies for supporting children throughout their learning years," said Councilmember David Della, who chairs the Committee of the Whole. "Seattle residents have proven to be compassionate to our children and willing to help them; it is up to our City's leaders to put forward the best package of programs that will accomplish that."

In 1990, former Mayor Norm Rice called an education summit where educators, parents, and community and business leaders came together to talk about how to do more for kids. The first Families and Education Levy grew from that community effort. This year's proposal would be the levy's second seven-year renewal.

The public hearing will be held in Council Chambers on the second floor of City Hall, 600 Fourth Avenue (entrance on Fifth Avenue). The hearing will be cablecast live on Seattle Channel 21 and Web cast live at www.cityofseattle.net/council.
