Capehart housing will become part of Discovery Park
SEATTLE- Mayor Greg Nickels and American Eagle Communities, LLC today announced an agreement that achieves an important community goal, the addition of the 23-acre Capehart housing site to Magnolia’s 534-acre Discovery Park.
Nickels announced the agreement with American Eagle, on behalf of the U.S. Navy, that achieves the goals of all parties by providing for the purchase by the city of the Capehart property as an addition to the park. Joining the Mayor were King County Executive Ron Sims; King County Councilmember Larry Phillips; Kathryn Thompson of the American Eagle Communities, LLC ; U.S. Navy Rear Adm. Leendert R. Hering, Sr., Commander, Navy Region Northwest/Commander, Naval Surface Group, Pacific Northwest; and members of the Magnolia community,
“I’m delighted that the Capehart housing will become an official part of Discovery Park,” said Mayor Nickels. “This is a win for everyone, especially the Magnolia community. It’s been a collaborative, respectful process, and I could not be more pleased with the result.”
“This agreement is truly a win-win solution for the park, the community, the City and Navy personnel, said Kathryn Thompson, managing director of American Eagle Communities.
“The county is honored to be a partner in Mayor Nickels’ effort to expand Discovery Park with its magnificent views and gorgeous beachfront,” said King County Executive Ron Sims. “This acquisition will be much heralded by future generations as a legacy worth preserving for public enjoyment forever.”
The main element of the agreement provides that the City will pay $9 million for the property containing the Capehart housing, which will return to the City for park use, and American Eagle will be responsible for demolishing the housing. In addition to the $9 million, the City will convey to American Eagle a City-owned property to be mutually identified and agreed upon. The agreement also provides that the housing in the historic district within the park will be preserved and privatized. American Eagle can then use, lease, or sell that housing.
The agreement is in the form of a Memorandum of Agreement; Mayor Nickels will forward to the City Council for its consideration legislation authorizing the agreement.
