New Names for Two Parks Seattle
Parks and Recreation Superintendent Ken Bounds announced today the names of two
parks as follows: Fremont Peak Park in Fremont, and Ella Bailey Park
in Magnolia. Fremont Peak Park, a half acre in size, is located 4357
Palatine Ave N on a west-facing bluff in upper Fremont with unobstructed views
of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains. In 2002 and 2004, Parks purchased the
property through the Pro Parks Levy, King County Conservation Futures Tax, Neighborhood
Matching Fund and community fundraising. The Friends of Fremont Peak Park community
group is spearheading the development of the park. The preliminary design includes
natural landscaping, paths and terraces. Previously known as Magnolia Elementary
Playfield, Ella Bailey Park is named after Ella Caughey Bailey, who sold
the property she owned at this site for the elementary school playfield. She was
a teacher for more than 30 years and worked hard to ensure that the land was secured
for a children's playground. The Pro Parks Levy provided $1.4 million for
improvements to the 2.4-acre site that had been leased to Seattle Public Schools.
Ella Bailey Park offers breathtaking views of Mt. Rainier, downtown Seattle, Interbay
and the Cascades and has long been a popular neighborhood site for viewing fireworks.
The new park will reclaim a derelict asphalt school yard, and will include a one-acre
grass field for youth sports without lights, a children's play are, view lawns
and picnic areas. Construction on the site will begin this spring. -
