Parks Announces Name for New Park in Uptown
Seattle Parks and Recreation Superintendent Ken Bounds today announced the naming of a new Seattle
park in the Uptown neighborhood: "Counterbalance Park: an Urban Oasis."
Parks acquired the .28-acre vacant property, located at the northeast corner of the intersection of
Queen Anne Avenue N and Roy Street, in 2004 after extensive community engagement. The 2000 Pro Parks
Levy and King County Conservation Futures Tax provided $1.7 million for the property purchase.
The Levy will also fund development of the site. Design concepts include benches, tables, trees and
a unique lighting feature. Construction is expected to take place in 2007. www.seattle.gov/parks/proparks/projects/queenanneparkdev.htm
The name honors the counterbalance trolley system that once took people up and down Queen Anne Avenue,
a unique element of Seattle's history, and identifies the site as a community gathering place, a place
for art, activity, and enjoyment.
