City of Seattle wins Municipal Excellence Award
Association of Washington Cities’
Community Service
Award goes to Seattle Animal Shelter
SEATTLE - Today Mayor Greg Nickels announced an award from the Association
of Washington Cities (AWC). At its 74th annual meeting in Tacoma, the AWC presented
a Municipal Excellence Award to the city of Seattle for the Seattle Animal
Shelter’s Volunteer and Foster Care Program.
“This is well-deserved recognition of some of the most dedicated volunteers
around. Our shelter volunteers are committed to improving the quality of life
for pets and their owners. Whether they’re donating professional services,
taking shelter dogs for daily walks, or taking sick or abused animals into
their homes to nurse back to health, our volunteers are a crucial part of the
shelter’s life saving work,” said Nickels.
Winning in the “Community Service Award” category, the shelter’s
nationally recognized program has more than 600 volunteers and 350 foster care
families. Collectively, the shelter’s volunteers donate more than 100,000
hours a year.
“Our volunteers are vital to the success of this shelter,” says
Shelter Director Don Jordan. “With their help in all that it takes to
rehabilitate animals and prepare them for adoption, we are reversing a trend
and are adopting out more than twice as many animals as we have to euthanize.
With our corps of volunteers, I know we will continue to reduce the number
of animals euthanized and improve the lives of those we save.”
The Municipal Excellence Awards are presented to cities that have demonstrated
outstanding achievements in promoting community excellence. Out of 67 entries,
Seattle’s entry was one of seven projects selected to receive an Excellence
Award. Entries are judged by subject category and each category has one winner.
“The Municipal Excellence Awards showcase the commitment of city officials
to continuous improvement and their willingness to build stronger communities,” said
Stan Finkelstein, AWC Executive Director,.
