In the 1990s, the community's Central Area neighborhood
plan identified the need for a park in the area near Madison and 23rd
Avenue.
Subsequently, the 2000 Pro Parks Levy included funding for acquisition
and development of a small park in the neighborhood. Working with the
community, Parks and Recreation staff identified a potential site for
acquisition and a future park.
In 2002, an anonymous gift of $1.3 million was made through the Seattle
Parks Foundation toward this new park, doubling the size of the park,
increasing park development funding for the site, and creating a small
maintenance endowment.
This represents one of the largest donations in the history of Seattle
Parks and Recreation. For more information, see
