PROJECT STATUS

Thank you, Seattle. This project is complete!

The Pro Parks portion of this project is complete. The general contractor has finished his work.

The community group is currently finishing up smaller projects in the park, including a seatwall around the overlook at the top of the slope and tile inserts for the entryway stairs.

A dedication ceremony was held on April 28, 2007. For more information about the park naming process, see the Press Release.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The focus of the Maple Leaf Community Garden project is to transform a vacant site at 529 NE 103rd Street into a community garden and gathering place that offers a pleasant oasis and safe environment for people to garden, congregate, learn and enjoy respite from more active nearby areas.

The property for this new park was acquired in 2003 with funds from the first cycle of the Pro Parks Levy Opportunity Fund, community contributions, Neighborhood Matching Fund, and King County Conservation Futures Tax. For more information, see the Maple Leaf community garden acquisition project.

The community obtained a Neighborhood Matching Grant to plan the development of the new park and community garden, and to create the schematic design.

COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION

The community successfully nominated this development project for the second cycle of the Pro Parks Levy Opportunity Fund. They have created a schematic plan for the site through a Department of Neighborhoods neighborhood matching grant.

Public Meeting #1 12/01/04
At this meeting, Barker Landscape Architects presented a site analysis and took suggestions for the garden design. At this working meeting everyone had an opportunity to work in small groups on the garden design.

Public Meeting #2 01/05/05
At this meeting, Barker Landscape Architects presented several design alternatives and rough cost estimates. Everyone had a chance to discuss and comment on the alternatives.

Public Meeting #3 01/26/05
At this meeting, Barker Landscape Architects presented a preferred design for the garden as well as initial cost estimates for development.
