Thank you, Seattle. This Pro Parks Levy acquisition project is complete.

On August 14, 2002 a 3.5 acre site in Northgate was acquired for a new branch library, community center and park.

The property, at Fifth Ave NE and NE 105th Street, formerly housed the Bon Tire Center. It is across the street (to the east) from Northgate Mall.

More than 1.5 acres of the site was acquired for the new Northgate Park through the Pro Parks Levy and King County Conservation Futures Tax funds.

The 1999 Community Center Levy and the 1998 Libraries for All bond measure funded the acquisition of the remainder of the property for the new library and community center.

The photo above shows the Bon Tire Site, outlined in red, that was acquired in August 2002 for a new park, library and community center.

The Northgate neighborhood is designated as an Urban Center in Seattle's Comprehensive Plan, and is targeted to receive additional growth. It is underserved in parks and open space according to the 2002 Parks and Recreation "Assessment of Gaps in Seattle's Open Space Network".

This project is an example of the need and opportunity to convert "gray spaces" to "green spaces" if we are to keep our urban neighborhoods livable, so they can retain and attract residents and thereby reduce continuing sprawl and the loss of rural open space.

COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION

Planning for the development of this new park at Northgate was coordinated with the development of the new library and community center. For more information see Northgate Community Center.

The new Northgate Park complements the nearby Thornton Creek Park #6, as shown in the photo above. The community has been very involved in creating paths and restoring the creek and habitat in this area.

In 2001, the Maple Leaf community nominated a nearby property at 5th NE and NE 103rd for purchase through the Pro Parks Levy Opportunity Fund. In July 2002, Seattle City Council approved funding towards the acquisition of that property for a new Maple Leaf community garden. The property was acquired in 2003, and the garden was completed in 2006.
