February 2007
Seattle Parks acquisition staff have been working with the community to identify potential sites for a new neighborhood park.

Two City-owned properties emerged as priority sites for the new park due to their availability and central location:
- the vacant property at the northeast corner of 12th Avenue and East Jefferson Street.
- a smaller property at the southeast corner of 12th and East James Court.

A public meeting was held on January 29, 2007. Parks acquisition staff recommended that the new park be located at the 12th and Jefferson site. However, those in attendance at the meeting favored the E. James Court site. Seattle Parks will now focus on the site at E. James Court as the preferred alternative and will work with other City departments to help determine the next steps in this process.

Meeting participants also suggested several sites that had recently come on the market and Parks staff agreed to research the possibility of those properties.

SCHEDULE

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The 12th Avenue Urban Village is one of the fastest growing neighborhoods in Seattle. In ten years (1994-2003) it achieved 155% of its 20-year residential growth target. This project seeks to acquire land for a new neighborhood park and gathering space for this densely developed community.

COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION

12th Avenue and Squire Park residents have been working for some time to increase park and open space in their neighborhood, and to create an active gathering place for the community. They successfully nominated this acquisition project for the second cycle of the Pro Parks Levy Opportunity Fund, and are working with Parks acquisition staff to explore potential sites for Parks purchase.
