Thank you Seattle! This project is complete. Recent fund-raising efforts by Seattle Parks Foundation, Seattle Junction Association (WSJA) and the Junction Neighborhood Association (JuNO) were successful and Parks moved forward with the development of this site. Parks awarded the contract to Mid Mountain Contractors Inc. and construction was completed in mid June 2010. Volunteer work parties were held to complete plantings. A final public meeting was held in October. Over 2008, Parks installed site improvements that include irrigation, new lawn and a path for site circulation. In September 2005, the Seattle City Council unanimously approved projects to be funded through the second cycle of the Pro Parks Levy Opportunity Fund, including $200,000 for this park development project. Seattle Parks and Recreation has named this park Junction Plaza Park. For more information, see the press release. Parks held two community meetings in fall 2007 to develop a schematic design (see notes and image below). The design is to provide both a destination and pass-through park in the junction of the traditional business and the growing mixed use area to the east. The design creates an open space geared toward encouraging casual daily use for relaxing, eating or people watching, that can also be used for Junction Association festivals like the West Seattle Festival and intermittent programs. The intersecting circles, buffered from the street by landscaping can be intimate while being flexible enough to host small performances. The circulation brings pedestrians into and through the park on there way to businesses or parking. The Seattle Design Commission reviewed the schematic design on Nov. 16. Notes are available on the Design Commission website. The consultant will respond to their comments during the next phase of design. Parks will continue working with community members over the next few months to raise additional funds to complete the project. Design work should resume in March.
PROJECT DESCRIPTIONWest Seattle Junction citizens nominated property at 42nd
and Alaska for acquisition in the first cycle of the Pro Parks Levy Opportunity
Fund. That enabled Seattle Parks and Recreation to acquire
the property at 42nd Ave SW and SW Alaska St. in 2005. |
The community also raised significant funds toward the acquisition. During the second cycle of the Pro Parks Opportunity Fund, the community again successfully nominated the site for park development funds. Funding from the second cycle of the Opportunity Fund will provide park amenities and develop the site to serve as a neighborhood park and gathering place in the heart of the West Seattle Junction business district.
