PROJECT STATUS
May 2008
On December 21, 2007, The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers issued
the permit for construction of four regulation athletic fields
and the sub-grade for a fifth field. Permit conditions include
mitigation for adverse effects on wetlands in the form of creation
of new wetlands and rehabilitation of degraded wetlands.
On March 3, 2008, The Public Advisory Team (P.A.T.) met for a
project status report from the Design Team and Parks Staff.
Just recently, opponents of the project filed an appeal of the
permit issued by the Army Corps. The appeal is pending in federal
court. Whether the appeal will delay construction is not known
at this time.
February 19, 2008, Department of Executive Administration Official
awarded the construction contract to Ohno Construction.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Warren G. Magnuson Park – Wetland, Habitat and Athletic Field
Development project is a proposed 43 acre park development. Approximately
40.8 acres will be graded to construct new site drainage improvements,
wetland and habitat areas, and new athletic fields.
The Berger Partnership, Landscape Architect PS, Seattle, WA., are
providing services for design development, planning, land use and
construction permitting, construction documents, and construction
administration.
The wetlands will be located in the southeast section of Warren
G. Magnuson Park. The five ballfields, just north of the new wetland
area, will include:
- 1 synthetic rugby field with lighting
- 2 synthetic soccer fields, one of which will have lighting
- 1 Little League field
- 1 adult baseball field with a synthetic infield and natural
turf outfield. It will also have field lighting.
Construction of wetlands and athletic fields is anticipated to begin
in spring 2008 and be complete in fall 2009.
Additional funding from the Pro Parks Levy Oversight Committee and
from City Council allowed for additional improvements, including
pedestrian improvements to the NE 65th Street park entrance, removal
of the central parking lot by the tennis courts, and creation of
additional habitat.
For more informaton on the City Council allocation in the 2007-
2008 budget, see the
press release

and Funding Plan (PDF)
In addition to Pro Parks Levy funds, the creation of Magnuson Park
Wetland/Habitat Development Phase II was made possible in part through
a WaterWorks grant awarded by the King County Department of Natural
Resources and Parks.
Phase I projects are complete!
The Sports Meadow Improvement project was completed in October 2005.
This improvement project renovated an existing 12-acre ballfield
into an unlit, natural grass sporting area. The Sports Meadow will
accommodate sports including soccer, Frisbee and flag football.
The field is now open.
Phase I of the project also included the demolition of several old
buildings at Warren G. Magnuson Park. The demotilions included the
old Commissary Bldg, two old metal structures and the old Bowling
Alley. The demolition was completed in Dec 2006.
