The Construction Phase is complete!
The existing unsafe and unsightly asphalt playground, has been replaced with a grass playfield, three council rings, play equipment, native plantings, and park-like areas with benches. The community will hold a grand opening in the Spring after installation of a community art project.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Graham Hill Elementary Playground Project is a school/community partnership to replace the existing unsafe and unsightly asphalt playground, which is cracked and uneven, weed-filled asphalt, with a grass playfield, three council rings, play equipment, native plantings, and park-like areas with benches.

Funding Sources
Funding for the project represents a coalition of government, private and community sources:
Pro Parks Opportunity Fund Grant Award of $100,000.
Department of Neighborhoods Neighborhood Matching Fund Large Project Grant Award of $80,0000,
Parks Gray to Green Matching Grant Award of $70,000,
King County Youth Sports Facilities Grant of $49,000,
Plus the community's match and other private funders.

Project History/Background:
Graham Hill Elementary School playground is located on the top of South Graham Street between Rainier Avenue South and Seward Park Avenue South and Seward Park Avenue South. Similar to many of the schools in the Seattle School District, Graham Hill is in need of renovation. Graham Hill also serves as a park and open space for the surrounding community after school and on weekends. This neighborhood is intensely residential and the open space invites use by not only school students, but also neighbors, and members of the nearby religious and cultural institutions. Currently the site, approximately almost an acre, is paved in almost 100% asphalt which is cracked and uneven. This results in numerous accidents from children tripping and falling and the uneven surface makes play very difficult, and unappealing to the community.

Newly created landscape beds and graded field soon to be seeded with grass.
