PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The project will develop a unique play area that will serve local
families as their "neighborhood play area" and will
draw visitors to the play area because of its unique naturalistic
character that reflects the natural environment of Seward Park
and the educational goals of the Environmental Learning Center.
Before its recent removal for safety reasons, the play area had,
in its twenty years become extremely popular. Since Parks didn't
have the funding to replace the play area, a neighborhood group,
The Seward Park Playground Improvement Foundation (SPPIF) formed
to help develop a safe and special play area that will be enjoyed
by kids today and by future generations. In the meantime there
is temporary play equipment and the swing.
The vision for a play space is intended to draw both the very
young and the teen and make it easy for parents to observe and
interact with their children and the greater community. The goal
is to incorporate diverse features of interest for children that
will give area children and their caregivers a fantastic place
to explore nature in a fun, physical way while providing opportunities
to safely play with others. Given that it will be located in one
of the most diverse neighborhoods in the United States, a welcoming
play area at Seward Park will afford people the chance to meet
and greet others they may not otherwise encounter.
