ABOUT THE CENTER

Magnuson Community Center

Magnuson Community Center, originally known as Building 47 or the "recreation building," was designed for training, recreation, and entertainment by base personnel. It was under construction when the United States entered World War II in 1941. Within its walls you would have found a swimming pool for practicing survival techniques, a gymnasium, handball courts, a weight training room, locker rooms, a bowling alley, and a library. In the years following the war, both the naval base and the recreation center underwent many changes. By the time the base was transferred to the City of Seattle, it needed a lot of maintenance. In early 2003, the building underwent significant renovations to the auditorium, gymnasium and ancillary spaces, opening up new facilities to northeast Seattle.

The Brig at Warren G. Magnuson Park

The Brig was designed as a jail for holding military prisoners from throughout the region. It was also the last building constructed on the base in 1988. It has enjoyed hosting Hollywood, serving as a set for scenes for several episodes of the "X-Files." In 2003, this building also underwent renovations that included installation of wood floors for indoor recreation, opening up a lobby area (which also links to an adjacent community garden), and an improved heating and ventilation system.
