Belltown Community Center
Project Fact Sheet

The 1999 Community Center Levy provided $1.9 million for a new community center for the Belltown community.

Facility Overview

The intent is to build an approximately 5,000 to 7,000 square feet facility with a multi-purpose room, kitchen and spaces for neighborhood events and celebrations - a community center to serve as a civic focal point, available for public meetings, classes and rentals.

Project Update (As of March 2007)

Ken Bounds, Superintendent of Parks and Recreation has informed the Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI) that Parks and Recreation will no longer be able to wait any longer for the Belltown View project to be completed and will be exploring other locations for the Belltown Community Center.

In January of 2007, LIHI informed Parks that the project the community envisioned could not be built with the funds available; nor could it be built and opened until 2009 at the earliest. In order to keep faith with the voters who approved the levy, Parks must pursue other options.

The project is on hold until a new location becomes available.

Public Involvement

There have been a number of opportunities for the community to be involved in this project. Regularly held Project Advisory Team (PDF) (PAT) and community meetings have been sponsored by the Parks Department and open to the public. In addition, Design Commission meetings have been a feature of the process of designing this facility. Those meetings are also open to the public.

Project Advisory Team

A Project Advisory Team (PDF) (PAT) was appointed by the Superintendent in November 2001. The PAT is an advisory committee made up of representatives of key stakeholder groups. It is intended to facilitate sustained and balanced stakeholder participation. For more information see the roles and responsibilities of the PAT. Meetings of the PAT have been open to the public. At its meetings the PAT reviews project scope, budget, schedule, recent accomplishments and upcoming tasks. The group's recommendations on these topics are given substantial weight by the Parks Department.

Meeting agendas and minutes are made available on this web page.
