Seattle Volunteer Naturalists Program

Interested in learning more about the flora and fauna of the Puget Sound region? Do you love sharing nature with others? Then you might be the perfect candidate for the Seattle Volunteer Naturalist program. Volunteer Naturalists participate in 10 weeks of training and commit at least one year to volunteering at Environmental Learning Centers and Parklands near schools throughout Seattle.  Volunteer naturalists provide hands-on learning opportunities for school groups; ages pre-school through 12th grade and programs for families and adults.  Volunteers’ backgrounds are as varied as the students they teach - the common thread is their desire to share nature with the greater Seattle community.

Deadline for applications is February 10, 2012

Advisory Council Member

We have a great opportunity for seniors, teens and adults of various cultures and community groups to join our advisory council. The benefit is being able to make a difference in your community and at your environmental learning center by providing input about public programming and facility uses. This is a three year commitment to help Camp Long achieve goals identified by the strategic planning of the Advisory Council. Skills we need: bookkeeping, business management, marketing, capital campaign fundraising, grant writing, program evaluation, educational assessment, liaisons with community groups, corporate giving solicitation, board management and board recruitment, multicultural education, database management, volunteer management, event planning, and any other nonprofit oversight or community relations ability. Mid-term Volunteer and Internship Opportunities

Trail Work Party Leaders

We're looking for someone who would like to help us lead work parties to improve our trails. Someone who has event planning or trail building experience is desirable. Responsibilities would include making a list of materials and tools needed for a work party, creating work station activities, giving tool safety talks, explaining how to do the work to volunteers, contacting organizations to come work on our trails, scheduling work parties, procuring donations of food and beverages and keeping tools clean and organized. This could be a shared responsibility with others. We are also looking for someone who would like to recruit for this group, set up a volunteer database and notify members of work parties. Short term Volunteer Opportunities

Green Seattle Partnership

We need your help! The Green Seattle Partnership is dedicated to restoring 2500 acres of forested Parkland in Seattle by 2025. We can't do it alone. Forest restoration volunteers work on removing invasive plants, planting new native trees and understory plants, and long term maintenance and monitoring of restoration sites. Green Seattle Partnership works in collaboration with Camp Long and other parks in Seattle.

Join us the third Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to help restore our Camp Long forest. Get out. Do Good. For more information about Green Seattle Partnership events at other parks, http://www.greenseattle.org/events.

Most of our trees are near the end of their natural lives. Seattle's trees are inundated with invasive plants, including English ivy, Himalayan blackberry, Scot's broom and knotweed. Invasive plants have choked out the seedlings that would replace today's forest. English ivy also climbs up into the canopy causing trees to topple in high winds. Within 20 years, 70% of our forests (2,500 acres) will be an ecological dead zone were invasive plants predominate, trees are dead or dying and wildlife habitat is gone.

We are the lucky and very fortunate recipients of many Eagle Scout projects at Camp Long! We’ve received display cabinets, literature racks, compost bins, fire storage sheds, trail steps and way finding signage, BUT WE NEED MORE! If you are a Boy Scout and need a project for your Eagle Scout rating, this is the place to come!
