Construction of the replacement building for the Magnuson Park Beach Comfort Station is 50% complete. The structure marks the legacy of the park as a Navy airfield with a slender, wing-like structure parallel to the shore and access road. A continuous metal surface forms both wall and roof, curving up from the land side wall to form a projecting canopy toward the water's edge. This unexpected curve distinguishes the utility of the comfort station and lends grace to the rugged durable materials.
The former swim beach restroom and lifeguard station was built by the Navy when the entire peninsula comprised Naval Air Station, Seattle. Prior to closure of the air station in the 1970s, there were many structures along the Lake Washington shoreline which were used for recreation. The new comfort station occupies the site of the officer’s bathhouse. Built in the early 1940s, it functioned well into the early 2000s before it was substantially damaged by an arson fire. When completed, the new comfort station will allow future generations to enjoy Lake Washington, just as sailors and naval aviators did many decades ago. The picnic shelter now found south of the Magnuson Boat Launch was originally the site of the bathhouse for enlisted personnel.
