Construction Impacts on 2008 Event Schedule

The Japanese Garden will not be able to host the Moon Viewing or Respect for Elders events in 2008 because of the construction that will be under way this summer. We regret this impact on both of these popular events, and look forward to scheduling these again in 2009.

Events

Jichinsai, Japanese Ground Pacification Ceremony

Monday, June 16th
10:00 a.m.

Rev Barrish of Tsubaki Grand Shrine of America will perform this traditional Shinto ceremony meant to calm the kami (spirit) of the earth whenever construction of a new building begins. The kami will be asked to protect the construction workers and that the project will proceed without incident.

Seattle Kokon Taiko will perform immediately following the ceremony (approx 10:45).

Visitors are invited to stroll the garden free of charge until noon, compliments of The Japanese Garden Advisory Council.

Haiku Day

Sunday June 29th
10:00 a.m.

Write and share haiku in traditional Japanese style.
Haiku walk at 10 a.m.; discussion and sharing to follow. Haiku Selection party at 11:30 a.m.

Hosted by Haiku Society of America. Public welcome. Free with garden admission.
