PROJECT STATUS

Thank you Seattle!
The community and Mayor Nickels celebrated the opening of this project on September 26, 2009. The educational wetlands and the Mickey Merriam Athletic Field Complex are woven together with paths and places for walking, running, biking, bird watching, and more, providing choices for recreation and environmental fun.

During the fall 2009 growing season additional plants are being planted at the project site. The baseball and softball fields will be open in fall 2010 after the natural grass outfields have time to mature.

One of the Levy’s final projects, this incredible landscape restoration is a huge step toward realizing a healthier community and the vision of Magnuson as a great and vibrant urban park.

On April 25, 2009 Mayor Nickels and supporters of Magnuson Park dedicated the north sportsfields of the Mickey Merriam Sportsfield Complex.

On April 4, 2008 notice to proceed was granted to Ohno Construction Inc., to commence work.

On March 3, 2008, The Public Advisory Team (P.A.T.) met for a project status report from the Design Team and Parks Staff.

February 19, 2008, Department of Executive Administration Official awarded the construction contract to Ohno Construction.

On December 21, 2007, The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers issued the permit for construction of four regulation athletic fields and the sub-grade for a fifth field. Permit conditions include mitigation for adverse effects on wetlands in the form of creation of new wetlands and rehabilitation of degraded wetlands.

The construction will limit access to some areas of the park.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Warren G. Magnuson Park – Wetland, Habitat and Athletic Field Development project is a proposed 43 acre park development. Approximately 40.8 acres will be graded to construct new site drainage improvements, wetland and habitat areas, and new athletic fields.

The Berger Partnership, Landscape Architect PS, Seattle, WA., are providing services for design development, planning, land use and construction permitting, construction documents, and construction administration.

The wetlands will be located in the southeast section of Warren G. Magnuson Park. The five ballfields, just north of the new wetland area, will include:

  • 1 synthetic lit rugby field with with secondary lines for Ultimate Frisbee
  • 2 synthetic lit soccer fields with secondary lines for Ultimate Frisbee
  • 1 Little League field/softball field with synthetic infield, natural turf outfield
  • 1 adult baseball field with synthetic infield and natural turf outfield without lighting
Construction of wetlands and athletic fields is anticipated to begin in spring 2008 and be totally complete in fall 2009. The northern two soccer fields and rugby field will be open in spring 2009.

Additional funding from the Pro Parks Levy Oversight Committee and from City Council allowed for additional improvements, including pedestrian improvements to the NE 65th Street park entrance, removal of the central parking lot by the tennis courts, and creation of additional habitat.
