PROJECT STATUS

EVENTS:

On National Trails Day, June 4, 2005, Parks Superintendent Ken Bounds joined the community and many of the volunteers who have contributed tirelessly to this project in dedicating the trails and bridge improvements.

Bridge and trail improvement work was completed in late 2004. Trail improvements and community planting efforts will reduce siltation of the creeks. Carkeek visitors now enjoy a solid path leading down into the park at the Eddie Mcabee Entry, and new bridge, stair and trail additions keep people and pets out of creeks along the South Ridge Trail (Norcross Entry).

The first phase of large scale invasive plant species removal took place above
the Salmon Slide play area in accordance with the Carkeek Park Forest Management Plan. Removal work extending all the way up to the north meadow was finished in January 2005. Summer 2005 a second large scale removal effort to follow up on last season's invasives work.

New orientation and wayfinding signs new imagery will guide the Carkeek visitor.

The community has provided valuable input to help shape these signs as well as new interpretive signs of the Piper Orchard and Salmon Slide play area.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This project has four key components: trail improvements,
signage, invasive plant removal, and habitat restoration/creek improvements. Parks has worked with the Carkeek Park Advisory Council to coordinate many aspects of the projects.

Community support and volunteer hours have enabled us to plant, build trails, and provide habitat improvements not possible with levy dollars alone.
