| PROJECT DESCRIPTION |
The 2000 Pro Parks Levy Opportunity Fund awarded
$100,000 to develop Hitt’s Hill open space. Hitt’s Hill Park is a 3.2-acre
wooded hilltop on the southwest end of Columbia City that was once home
to the Hitt’s Fireworks factory.
Thomas Gabriel Hitt founded the Hitt Brothers Firework Company on the hill
in about 1905. From the top of the hill, it is possible to view Lake Washington,
downtown Seattle and the Rainier Valley. The family-run fireworks company
is credited with creating pyrotechnics for the movie “Gone With the Wind,”
as well as providing fireworks for shows at Green Lake and Ivar’s Fourth
of July celebrations through the 1970s.
The areas that contained materials left over from the old Hitt’s Fireworks
factory site were remediated in 2001-2002, shortly after the property was
acquired by the Parks Department.
Hitt’s Hill Park has a strong community support group. Community members
who nominated the property for the Opportunity Fund have made and expect
to make an ongoing commitment to the maintenance of site. No play structures
or facilities other than trails are planned for Hitt's Hill Park.
Funds for Hitt's Hill Park were provided by the 2000 Pro Parks Levy Opportunity
Fund, the Seattle Neighborhood Matching Fund, the King County Natural Resources
Stewardship Network, many other private and public funds, and the hard work
of the Friends of Hitt's Hill. |
