Thank you, Seattle your support for the 2000 Pro Parks Levy has resulted
in the following improvements to Wallingford Playfield:
New perimeter walking path,
Renovated park entrances, pool and play area,
New play equipment,
New overlooks at the west entrance to the tennis courts, and
New site furnishings including picnic tables, benches, and lamp posts.
The Friends of Wallingford Playfield have been instrumental in the success
of this project. This park is a result of their vision and dedication.

| PROJECT DESCRIPTION |
Project Description:
Using Pro Parks Levy dollars, a perimeter path - occassionally lined with
benches - was constructed around the playfield. Park entrances, with the
exception of the southwest corner, were renovated with new entry features.
Two new play structures were erected and the wading pool was renovated.
All elements are ADA accessible.
Construction started in July 2002 and was substantially complete by the
end of December 2002.

Project History/Background:
Wallingford playfield was included as part of the Wallingford Neighborhood
Plan which was approved and adopted by the Seattle City Council on Nov.
2, 1998. Friends of Wallingford Playfield (FoWP) was founded in 1999 with
the intent to renovate the park. A FoWP associated committee initiated the
planning process with a survey intended to identify the concerns of park
users. Two consecutive small and simple grants from the Department of Neighborhoods
(DON) enabled the community to hire the landscape architecture firm of Allworth
Nussbum to develop a conceptual site plan for the entire park as well as
prepare the construction documents for the Sunken Garden and Southeast Picnic
Area.
FoWP then applied for and received a large project grant, also from Department
of Neighborhoods, which funded construction of the Sunken Garden and SE
Picnic Area as well as the preparation of construction documents for the
play area, perimeter path, and entry renovations. When Pro Parks dollars
became available through passage of the Pro Parks Levy in November 2000,
the Parks Department took responsibility for the remaining construction.
The neighborhood group has also renovated the west border of the park -
a rather short, steep, west facing slope - into a vibrant native plant garden.

The landscape architecture firm of Allworth Nussbaum
held a series of three community meetings during concept development.
Throughout the entire process, FoWP provided a "parallel process" which
allowed for review and input from those community members who were unable
to attend the scheduled meetings. Materials were posted to a website and
displays were located at several popular community locations. FoWP then
notified community members via e-mail, mail, local press releases, and
flyers that new material was available for review and comments were appreciated.
FoWP also included outreach at community events such as the Seattle Tilth
Festival, Wallingford Wurst Festival, What's Cookin' Wallingford and the
Wallingford Kiddie Parade.
