The following standards apply to all candidates for Police Officer:
Minimum Standards
- Applicants must be at least 20.5 years of age at the time of taking the exam to be hired.
- United States Citizenship is required.
- Proof of high school diploma or a certified GED.
- A valid Washington State Driver's License is required prior to being hired.
- Military discharge under honorable conditions (fair employment laws apply)
Drug Use
- Have not used Marijuana in the past three (3) years.
- Have not used Marijuana more than 25 times in the past ten (10) years.
- Have not used club drugs such as Ketamine, GHB, Rohypnol, MDMA (ecstasy), or any other illegal drug not listed here in the past five (5) years.
- Have not inhaled aerosols, sometimes referred to as Huffing (paint) or Whippits (Nitrous Oxide) or used Khat in the past five (5) years.
- Have not illegally used prescription drugs in the past three (3) years.
- Have not engaged in the illegal use of steroids within the past five (5) years.
- Have not used any hallucinogens, cocaine, methamphetamines or opiates within ten (10) years.
- Have not used four (4) or more controlled substances within ten (10) years.
- Have not used any illegal drug(s) or illegally used prescription drug(s) more than twenty-five (25) times in the past (10) years prior to the date of this Acknowledgement of Minimum Standards Regarding illegal drug use.
- Please note that the time frame on the above listed drug use items starts when filling out the Personnel History Information (PHI) Packet form titled "Acknowledging the minimum standards regarding illegal drug use".
- Have not used any illegal drug(s) while employed in a criminal justice and/or law enforcement capacity.
- Have not manufactured or cultivated illegal drug(s) for the purpose of the sales/marketing of the drug(s).
Traffic Record
An applicant's driving record will be thoroughly assessed and may be a factor for disqualification. Examples of infractions/traffic crimes that may be disqualifying:
- Driving While Intoxicated (DWI), Reckless Driving, or Hit & Run Driving.
- Suspension of your driver's license within five (5) years of the date of application.
- Three (3) or more moving violations (speeding, negligent driving, etc.) in the past five (5) years of the date of application will be carefully reviewed.
- Two (2) or more accidents within five (5) years of the date of application, wherein applicant was judged to be at fault and/or charged with a moving violation.
Criminal Record
An applicant's criminal record, including all arrests, prosecutions, deferred prosecutions, "Alford" pleas, and non-conviction information will be thoroughly assessed and may be grounds for disqualification. The following will be disqualifying:
- Any adult felony conviction.
- Any misdemeanor or felony conviction while employed in a criminal justice and/or law enforcement capacity.
- Any domestic violence conviction.
Employment Record
An applicant's employment history, including any terminations, or leaving an employer in lieu of termination, will be thoroughly assessed and may be grounds for disqualification.
Financial Record
An applicant's credit history, including excessive credit card debt or unresolved accounts in collection will be thoroughly assessed and may be grounds for disqualification. The following will be disqualifying:
- Failure to pay income tax or child support.
