On 3-6-08 the Rainier Chamber of Commerce honored Officer Don Jones and Officer Adley Shepherd as their Officers of the quarter.  Both Officers attended the award ceremony at the Rainier Chamber of Commerce luncheon.

OFFICER DON JONES

Officer Don Jones is currently assigned to the Columbia City/Mount Baker neighborhoods as part of the South Precinct Community Police Team. Over the past two years he has worked tirelessly to improve the safety of the neighborhoods as well as improving the relationships between its community members and the Department.  Don is one of the South Precinct’s brightest stars. Several times during the week you will see him patrolling Columbia City on his police bicycle. You can also see him conducting traffic enforcement in area school zones and along the Rainier Avenue corridor. In an effort to keep area school children and pedestrians safe, Don Jones routinely issues over 50 speeding citations a month.

Officer Jones is currently working closely with Lowe’s Hardware in an effort to keep unauthorized day workers from blocking entrances and harassing customers. Officer Jones has issued nearly 75 trespass warnings on the property and has made two trespass arrests in the past few months.

Officer Jones is the first to volunteer for extra assignments and is quick to take on difficult projects. Ridding Columbia City of abandoned vehicles is an on going project of Officer Jones. He routinely warns and cites vehicles for violating the 72 hours ordinance. In the past 30 days Officer Jones has warned over 50 vehicle owners and towed scores of cars and trucks from the area.

Don Jones truly enjoys his working relationship with the people of Southeast Seattle. Both Officer Jones and Southeast Seattle greatly benefit from this association.

OFFICER ADLEY SHEPHERD

Officer Adley Shepherd has consistently been one of SPD’s most pro-active and productive officers. He is always out there patrolling those areas that have the highest amount of gang and criminal activity. He routinely leads the rest of the watch in arrests, narcotics seized, and weapons recovered.

In the last six months Officer Shepherd has made over 8 narcotics arrests, six felony warrant arrests, a rape arrest, two home invasion arrests, arrested 4 felons for carrying guns, numerous assault arrests and intimidating a witness arrest.  In addition, he has recovered 149 grams of rock cocaine, 126 grams of marijuana, 700 tablets of “Ecstasy”, 6 handguns, a rifle, shotgun and $10,000 in U.S. currency.

Officer Shepherd has come to know many of the purported gang members that hang out in the South end, particularly those who call the Rainier and Henderson area home. He knows them by both name and moniker and set. He has been instrumental in the identification of many suspected shooters in gang-related incidents and has forwarded those names to either the Gang Unit or our Homicide Unit.

Officer Shepherd truly has made an impact on this community by his tireless work at finding and arresting criminals.
