Even if you feel you cannot control your current situation, the following are the powers you DO have to protect yourself, your children, and your money. THE POWERS YOU DO HAVE If I am in immediate danger, I can call 9-1-1. If I feel down , I can call the 24 hour Crisis Line for support at 206-461-3222, or talk to another supportive person. If I am depressed or having suicidal feelings, I can call the Crisis Line at I can tell others I trust how they can help me to stay safe. I can teach my children and safe friends a code word that is a signal if I am in danger. I can take care of myself by eating well and getting enough sleep. I know that drinking alcohol or using drugs can impair my judgment and reduce my safety. I can contact the Protection Order Advocates at (206) 296-9547, Monday through Friday for help with getting a Protection Order. I can put important documents (such as birth certificates, children’s immunization records, lease, passport, green card, social security card…) in a safe place. STAYING SAFE AT WORK If my partner knows my travel routine, I can take an alternate route. I can tell trusted coworkers and my supervisor about my situation, bring a photo of my abuser to work, and have a coworker or supervisor screen my calls. STAYING SAFE IF YOU LEAVE I can stay at the home of a friend (or a friend of a friend) my partner does not know for safe housing. In case of emergency, I can also go to hotel/motel or I can call the Crisis Line at (206) 461-3222 for help in locating safe housing. If I leave, I can bring car keys, identification, important documents, passport, money, checkbook and credit cards, extra clothes, my phone book and medications with me. I can also bring my child’s favorite toys. I can be aware of all of the possible exits from where I am staying. I can check that windows and doors lock, and that smoke alarms work. I can also ask household members to screen my calls. If I have a weapon, I can give it to police for safekeeping. |
