Domestic Violence-
Preparing to Leave

Leaving your partner is a critical time and requires careful preparation. Your partner may become violent if they discover that you are planning to leave, however, being prepared to make a quick break away from the relationship is an important key to reducing the risk of violence.

If possible, pack the following and leave them with a trusted friend:

ESSENTIALS - ALWAYS HAVE IN PURSE OR WALLET

  • ID, Social Security card(s)
  • Keys
  • Quarters for phone calls (or dial "0" or 9-1-1)
  • Medication (if needed for self/kids)
  • DV Hotline phone number (1-800-562-6025)
  • Address book – relatives and friends to call/notify
  • Hide important papers

PAPERWORK - HAVE ALL IN ONE PLACE

  • Marriage certificate
  • Birth certificate(s); especially for kids
  • Medical records: immunizations, etc.
  • Bank statements or account numbers
  • Immigration papers
  • Passport (self and kids)
  • Certificate or voucher for housing
  • Car title and registration
  • Resume/employment records

MAKE SURE YOU KNOW

  • Exits out of house/apartment/building
  • Children’s school phone numbers
  • Nearest pay phone (preferably indoor; ideal might be 24-hour coffee shop)
  • In hidden bag (possibly at child care provider's/friend's)
  • Consider making up a secret code to write yourself messages

WHAT TO PACK

  • Diapers/bottles/formula mix
  • Food/snacks for kids
  • Toy or book
  • As much money as possible
