BURGLARY PREVENTION
PHYSICAL SECURITY
-
Physically securing your home is usually one of the least expensive and most effective burglary prevention measures. Some ideas to consider:
-
Solid core wood, metal or other reinforced doors, Reinforced door jams or jam braces.
-
Three-inch screws, heavy-duty strike plates and tamper proof hinges.
-
Safety glass or security film on vulnerable windows.
-
Motion sensor lighting, specifically directed and focused on entry points and venerable areas, no flood lighting and beware of light trespass.
-
OTHER PREVENTION TECHNIQUES
-
There are proven alternative techniques to protect your home. One is by involving trusted neighbors through active BlockWatch Programs.
Another way you can protect your home is by considering the design and landscape of your residence and making simple modifications to areas that may contribute to security problems. This technique is called Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED).
OTHER PREVENTION TECHNIQUES
While alarms can be a good additional security measure, they should not be your only security measure. Because of the high risk of false alarms and increased fees for false alarm activations, you may want to consider the above options for making your home physically secure before installing an alarm system.
-
If you have an interest in technology/electronics, one effective method is the self-installation of a remote camera with interactive audio, or remote internet access viewing.
-
If you already have an alarm system, you may want to consider an alternative response agency such as a private guard service to verify alarm activations to avoid false alarm activations.
