FACTS ABOUT CRIME and PREVENTION

Seattle is one of the safest major cities in the US.  In one year there are about 6 or 7 violent crimes for every 1,000 people who live here. Even though violent crimes - homicide, robbery, aggravated assault and rape - are the most serious types of crimes, they are relatively rare in Seattle.  The average Seattleite has a much greater chance of being a victim of property crime (some type of theft) than a violent crime.

Fortunately, by employing some basic techniques, you can often reduce the likelihood that a criminal will target you or your property. While no safety or prevention tips can ever guarantee immunity from crime, taking a few extra minutes to think about and use good crime prevention techniques can often remove one key factor criminals look for . . . opportunity.

GET INFORMED and STAY SAFE

Knowledge is Power - Learning simple crime prevention techniques and employing them can dramatically decrease your chances of crime happening to you.

Zero Tolerance - Active communities are the best partners the police have when it comes to fighting crime. Showing that small crimes and nusiance activities will not be tolerated in your neighborhood sends clear signals to criminals to stay away. That means painting over graffiti, posting block watch signs and reporting suspicious activity.

Staying Safe after Crime - If you are a survivor of crime or are in an abusive situation, you may feel a loss of power and control in your life. Recognizing this and the steps you can take to support and protect yourself can increase your sense of security.
