Amber Alert Program

WHAT IS THE AMBER ALERT PROGRAM?

In October of 2002, the King County regional Amber Alert system was launched. In August of 2004 this system transitioned to cover the entire state through the Washington State Amber Alert system.

A collaborative effort between law enforcement agencies and the local media, the goal of Amber Alert is to instantly publicize and share information about children who are abducted or become missing under specific criteria. By alerting the public to watch for missing children, the chances for law enforcement to find a child quickly and to protect them from potential harm are dramatically increased.

HOW DOES THE AMBER ALERT PROGRAM WORK?

The participating police agencies have contributed to developing uniform policies and procedures that allow law enforcement to partner with the media, and the public, in the event of child abduction. Should a child be abducted in the state, the investigating police agency can immediately notify other jurisdictions and media providers. The media then broadcast any available information to aid the public in searching for the child.

AMBER ALERT PROGRAM SUCCESSES

The Amber Alert program has already proven instrumental in the safe return of dozens of children nationwide . . .
