Line of Duty Deaths

TO PROTECT AND TO SERVE

Policing carries with it the burden that at any point an officer may pay the ultimate sacrifice by giving his/her life to save another. The people who are called to this job knowingly accept these risks everyday, choosing to walk into danger to protect others.

ABOUT THIS SITE AND THESE STORIES

A few years ago, Officer Tim Renihan who worked in the East Precinct at the time, noticed a small dedication in the precinct to a fallen officer without a photo or story to accompany it. He thought it was wrong to lose the story of who this Officer was and, along with support from his Precinct Captain and other officers, took on a research project to put faces and stories to the list of fallen officers. Funded through donations from both officers and community members, on May 9th, 2001, the East Precinct dedicated a "Wall of Honor" to SPD officers who have died in the line of duty. The research for this project has provided the stories and photos available on this site today.

While every attempt was made to be as accurate as possible, in some cases records were minimal and had to be taken from news reports. If you are a friend or family member of one of the officers listed here and notice an error, please contact us.

THE HEADQUARTERS MEMORIAL WALL

In 2003, the Department's move to new headquarters prompted Officer Greg McFadden to ensure that the wall in the old Public Safety building that bore the names of the officers who had been killed in the duty would be preserved in the new Seattle Police Headquarters building. With the help of the Retired Police Officer's Association and the Seattle Police Foundation, a memorial wall was dedicated in the lobby of the new building during the the Washington State Peace Officers' Ceremony.
