A HISTORY OF SUPPORT Even with the advances that have been made in the past twenty years regarding our understanding of sexually motivation crimes, individuals who experience these offenses are often embarrassed and ashamed. Seattle was one of the first Police Departments to have a specialized unit to investigate these types of crimes. ABOUT THIS UNIT The Sexual Assault and Abuse Unit has 12 of detectives and two Victim Advocates, who provide ongoing support to victims and their families. The unit investigates all child abuse cases, both sexual and physical and works closely with CPS and other advocacy agencies. It also houses the Sex Offender Notification Unit which has four detectives assigned. They are charged with ensuring that Sex Offenders are registered and complying with the conditions of their release, as well as, provide public education and outreach. In addition to the special skills needed to work with these victims, the detectives assigned to the Special Assault Unit are committed to using their entire investigative prowess to identify, arrest and charge offenders who commit these offenses. This is a unit that has been a leader in sex crime investigations and continues to keep pace with the new and innovative practices that allow for victims to be treated with dignity and respect and holds offenders accountable for their actions.
