Discovery Park Visitor Center
The Discovery Park Visitors Center, which opened in January, 1998, features a series of site-integrated artworks by Seattle Artist Bruce Myers. The artworks are located throughout the building and landscape of the Center, at 3801 West Government Way, Seattle.
Leaf Legend is a series of troweled natural leaves complimented by sand cast bronze leaves set into concrete inside and outside the building. Strata Benches consists of four layered- and cast-concrete benches with integral color pigments and local aggregate, mimicking the rocky bluffs of Discovery Park. Six cast concrete pavers, Ripple Sculptures, are set into the outdoor courtyard.
Bruce Myers's states, "The Leaf Legend's fossil-like impressions portray a pallet of leaves in the concrete walking surfaces throughout the Visitor Center. I felt that using actual leaves native to the park would engage visitors, and echo through association, fallen leaves to larger cycles in nature. The Strata Benches reflect the antiquity and character of the bluffs along the southwest shore. The Ripple Sculptures evoke the coastal setting of the Puget Sound and the expansive tidal flats of the South Beach at Discovery Park."
The Visitor Center, which Mayor Schell described as a "work of art" in itself, was designed by architects Miller Hull.
