Seattle Aquarium

general info | photo gallery | map & directions

The Seattle Aquarium is a nationally recognized aquatic educational center built in 1977 by the City of Seattle on Pier 59, at the edge of Puget Sound's Elliott Bay. The Aquarium is open daily and serves three-quarters of a million visitors annually.

The Seattle Aquarium provides fun and exciting ways to see, touch and explore the underwater world of the northwest and beyond. With a wide range of colorful sea creatures in award-winning exhibits, touch pools, and trained naturalists, the Aquarium continues in its mission of inspiring conservation of our marine environment. As the region's leading provider of marine science education, The Seattle Aquarium serves more than 40,000 school children annually.

The feature exhibits at the Seattle Aquarium include the Marine Mammal Exhibit where you can see fur seals, harbor seals and the popular sea otters. The Seattle Aquarium was the first facility in the world to have a successful birth of a sea otter that survived to adulthood. The Underwater Dome, a large 400,000 gallon inverted fish bowl shows the life you would find diving here in Puget Sound. You'll see salmon, sturgeon, dogfish and wolf eels as well as many species of rock fish, and skates. The Pacific Coral Reef, is a large exhibit showing the colorful animals of the tropical Pacific Ocean. Children especially love seeing Nemo and Dori look-alikes. Life of a Drifter is an exhibit featuring Jellyfish and the Giant Pacific Octopus. The Jelly exhibit is an archway where you can stand in the middle and watch the jellys glide past you. The Octopus exhibit is a multi-species tank showing you animals that live with the octopus including rock fish and a wolf eel. Finally Life on the Edge, two very large touch tanks showing off animals from Washington's outer coast as well as animals from Puget Sound. Guests are encouraged to gently touch the tidepool animals and learn more about them.

The Seattle Aquarium recently remodeled part of the building. The expansion opened in early summer of 2007 and includes a new Window on Washington Waters exhibit - a 120,000 gallon exhibit featuring animals from the coast of Washington.
