Ballard

general info | photo gallery | map

Ballard is one of Seattle's oldest neighborhoods, founded in 1853 and annexed to Seattle in 1907. Ballard has Scandinavian roots and strong ties with the marine industry. It is fast becoming a hub for area artists, creative boutiques and gourmet bistros. Ballard is unique and eclectic, with one foot planted in Seattle's colorful past and the other stepping into Seattle's vibrant future. The visitor's attraction of the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks are also known as the Ballard Locks due to their location here, adjoining Puget Sound with (eventually) Lake Washington via the ship canal.

Local attractions of note include Archie McPhee's, which carries toys, gifts and novelties that are truly novel, the graceful and luxurious Majestic Bay Movie Theatre, and the Nordic Heritage Museum, with galleries that highlight the achievements of people from all the Nordic countries in the Pacific Northwest.
