Gas Works Park and Lake Union

Just north of downtown, Lake Union is a stop off between Puget Sound and Lake Washington via the Ship Canal. Colorful banners flap in the breeze here, flowers brighten the docks, and outside the front doors of the floating homes are sailboats, kayaks and canoes.
Seaplanes scoot in and out, on their way to and from the San Juan Islands and British Columbia. Huge cruisers and tour boats motor about and sailboats rule the waves during the Tuesday evening "Duck Dodge," a free-for-all regatta. View restaurants hug the shore to the north, south, east and west, providing ringside seats to watch the non-stop action.
On the north end of Lake Union is Gas Works Park, with a spectacular view of the lake and the city beyond. Throughout the summer, Gas Works Park hosts all kinds of festivals: a 4th of July celebration, Seattle Peace Concerts, and even live performances of Shakespeare. When there is not a festival going on, Gas Works is a great place to have a picnic or fly a kite. A beautiful sundial is situated at the top of the hill within the park.
