2009 Central Business District (CBD) Paving & Street Improvements
Project Updates
Most of the 2009 paving and street improvement projects are substantially complete. Some projects originally scheduled for 2010 and moved up to 2009 (i.e., Second Avenue – Pike to Jackson; and Marion Street) have been substantially completed as well.
SDOT has added projects with a short duration to the 2009 schedule (i.e., First Avenue & Columbia Street intersection; and sections of Third Avenue. The First Avenue & Columbia Street intersection work has been completed.
For those of you who have had to work and/or travel through downtown, thank you for your patience!
The following is a brief update on the projects that have been under construction this past spring and/or summer, as well as projects that have recently started construction.
Stewart Street - Eastlake Avenue E to First Avenue
The entire road from Eastlake Avenue E to First Avenue is now paved and open to traffic. There is still some touch up and finishing work underway. When complete, Stewart will have a peak period transit lane throughout the corridor.
Second Avenue - Denny Way to Pike Street
Work is largely complete on Second Avenue and the entire corridor from Denny to Pike has been fully opened to traffic! Construction has been ongoing since May of this year. Crews are now engaged in finishing installation of new curb ramps or retrofitting existing ones. When weather conditions are favorable, the pavement markings (including re-establishing the green bike lanes) will be completed.
Fourth Avenue - Olive Way to Denny Way
Work has been completed for several months on this project.
Pike Street – First Avenue to Second Avenue
Work has been completed for several months on this project.
Fourth Avenue South – Airport Way S to Jackson Street
Work has been completed for several months on this project.
Second Avenue - Pike Street to Jackson Street
Improvements to the Second Avenue corridor between Pike and Jackson streets are substantially complete. The work was finished nearly a month ahead of schedule. Minor touch-up work remains as crews wrap up.
Fourth Avenue - Jackson Street to Olive Way
Work began last month on the final segment of Fourth Avenue between Jackson and Olive. In the first phase, crews will completely reconstruct Fourth Avenue between Jackson and James streets. The work in this area is much more intensive than any done in downtown to date so crews will be working on this segment into January of next year.
Construction work will move north toward Olive Way, with the next two phases continuing into the summer of 2010. The project will reconstruct most of Fourth Avenue between S Jackson Street and Seneca Street, and replace selected concrete panels between Seneca Street and Olive Way.
Overall, the project includes reconstructing the roadway, upgrading curb ramps, repairing sidewalks, restriping lane markings, and making minor drainage improvements. The entire project is scheduled to wrap up my mid-summer of 2010.
Marion Street – Western Avenue to Sixth Avenue & Columbia Street – First Avenue to Second Avenue
Improvements on Marion Street are substantially complete. This project was accelerated from the 2010 schedule in the Mayor ’s Seattle Jobs Forward package.
SDOT’s paving contractor has also completed grinding and paving work at the intersection of First Avenue & Columbia Street and on Columbia Street up to approximately 100 feet east of the intersection. This work was finished within a 25hr period, over a weekend in early October.
Broad Street - Elliott to 1st Avenue
Construction started in September and paving was completed in mid October. Installation of final pavement markings remains to be completed when weather is favorable.
Wall Street - Fifth Avenue to Sixth Avenue
Construction started in late September and is to be completed by mid November.
The Wall Street project includes replacing all the existing concrete roadway panels with new panels from just east of Fifth Avenue through the Sixth Avenue intersection. The project will also include constructing ADA accessible curb ramps, installing bus shelter foundations, and restoring or repairing adjacent sidewalk.
Third Avenue – Pike Street to Virginia Street and Spring Street to Union Street
As part of SDOT’s paving and street improvements program a number of concrete panels will be replaced on Third Avenue between Spring Street and Union Street, and between Pike Street and Virginia Street.
Construction will primarily occur during the weekends of October 24 th and 25 th (select panels between Spring Street and Union Street) and November 7 th and 8 th (select panels between Pike Street and Virginia Street), though some mid-week, off-peak period work will be performed. The contractor will start work as early as 8:00 a.m. and will conclude by 10:00 p.m.
Traffic may be restricted to one lane in each direction during the course of the construction work.
During the weekend of Nov 7 & 8 th, Third Avenue will be closed between Pike and Stewart streets, and Stewart and Virginia streets. Stewart Street will be open and detours will posted for northbound and southbound Third Avenue traffic.
