Expect periods of NIGHT work between S Washington Street and S Jackson Street along Second Avenue Ext S
The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) and its contractor are continuing improvements to the Second Avenue corridor between Pike Street and Jackson Street. The project is expected to be substantially complete by the end of September. During these improvements, periods of evening and early morning work will take place during the week of September 21, 2009. This work will take place in the vicinity of Second Avenue Extension South between South Washington Street and South Jackson Street.
What work will take place during the evenings?
During the day, crews are pouring new concrete panels along Second Avenue Extension S. Once this concrete partially cures, crews must return as soon as possible to make small relief cuts in this newly poured “green” concrete before it fully cures. This work can only be done once the concrete has partially cured, and must be done at the right temperature and humidity level. If this work is not completed at the right time, the newly poured concrete panels will crack and require reinstallation. While crews try to accomplish this relief cutting during regular day time hours, there will be several times when evening and early morning work will become necessary.
What noise should I expect during this work?
Should evening and early morning work become necessary, the work will entail several hours of sawing relief cuts into the newly poured “green” concrete panels. This sawing may be loud and disruptive in nature. This work may take place between 10:00pm and 8:00am. Please note that this work is weather dependant.
What traffic impacts will accompany this work during the week of September 21
- Traffic will be restricted to one lane 24/7 on Second Avenue Extension S between Yesler Way and S Jackson Street.
- The west side the S Washington Street intersection with Second Avenue Extension S will be closed 24/7 as well.

SDOT's contractor is planning to complete this project by the end of September.
Concrete repairs on Second Avenue between Pike Street and Yesler Way are now
complete and all traffic lanes are open.
Crews are now focused on the area between Yesler Way and Jackson Street in
Pioneer Square where they are completely reconstructing the Second Avenue
Extension. There will be intermittent closures at times of Third Avenue,
Main Street and Washington Street at Second Avenue Extension with detours
posted as crews pave these intersections.

Construction Moving Further South on Second Avenue
Expect Periodic Cross Street Closures, Parking and Loading Zone Restrictions, Noise and Dust
The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) and its contractor C.A. Carey Construction Company are continuing improvements to the Second Avenue corridor between Pike Street and Jackson Street.
Work Schedule for the Next Several Weeks:
This week, construction crews plan to complete concrete panel replacements between Columbia and James streets, and sidewalk work in a few other areas. The contractor will also focus attention on work between S Washington and S Jackson streets.
Over the next several months, work will involve the reconstruction of the entire roadway between S Washington and S Jackson streets beginning with the intersection at S Main Street.
Expect intermittent closures of S Main Street, Third Avenue S, and S Washington Street during this work. Detours will be posted.
Weekend work is anticipated August 28-29.
Also, several smaller projects such as - asphalt and concrete patching, lane striping and sealing cracks in the roadway - will take place between Pike and Washington streets. These projects are small in nature, and should not cause excessive impacts to surrounding businesses.
Traffic Impacts:
Generally, two travel lanes will be open on Second Avenue, except during weekend work when there may be one lane open to traffic.

Project Information
Originally scheduled for 2010 construction, this project was accelerated as part of the Mayor's economic stimulus package, called "Seattle Jobs Forward", to create jobs and revive the local economy. The "Seattle Jobs Forward" is a package of immediate local action to create direct jobs and boost Seattle’s economy over the next two years.
This project will provide new concrete panels and reconstructed areas of roadway, upgraded curb ramps, sidewalk repair, restriping of lane markings and minor drainage improvements. The funding for this project is provided by the Bridging the Gap Transportation Levy approved by Seattle voters in 2006.
