Parking Management Study (2002)

October 14, 2002

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is pleased to release the Parking Management Study report, developed with input from a Stakeholder Advisory Committee. City staff initiated the study in June 2002.

The Seattle Parking Management Study was done in conjunction with a Parking Tax Analysis, and recommends new programs, practices, and policies that look at how the City can improve the efficiency of on-street parking management. Acting on one of those recommendations, we are launching a pilot program in 2003 using new pay station technology (to replace parking meters) that accepts bank cards, thereby eliminating the need for people to carry large amounts of change. Providing the public with this convenience is one of the recommended ways we can improve a basic city service.

SDOT staff are now working with other City departments to develop an Action Plan for implementation. Many of the recommendations involve changes to various City practices or to the Seattle Municipal Code. The creation earlier this year of the Policy, Planning and Major Projects Division within SDOT provides for dedicated staff resources to address citywide on-street parking issues. While some recommendations will be made in the near term, it will take several years to fully evaluate and implement all of the study's 42 recommendations.
