Improving Mercer Corridor : Design

SDOT is moving forward with the design phase for Mercer in 2007. The final design will be complete in 2008.

60% Design

SDOT completed the 60% design for the Mercer Corridor project in June 2007. The design team incorporated input from the community and general public early in the design phase and has been working extensively with stakeholders from within SDOT, as well as with Seattle Public Utilities, Seattle City Light (SCL), Department of Planning and Development (DPD), Seattle Parks and Recreation, Seattle Fire Department, King County Metro, Washington State DOT, and a long list of private utilities located within the project area. Our design work has also required close coordination with several projects currently in construction, such as the Streetcar project, the Lake Union Park Redevelopment project, as well as with upcoming private development projects within the area.

Additionally, it should be noted that SDOT has incorporated the majority of the Mercer Stakeholder Committee's Recommendations in the development of the 60% design. The link below shows the 60% design layout for Mercer Corridor. Note that SDOT is currently designing Mercer Corridor to include the Broad Street Interim Connection. We are still working toward a solution to extend 2-way Mercer west of 9th Ave , however, this work will likely be constructed as part of a separate project. A conceptual design of 2-way Mercer west of 9 th Ave is also provided below.

Moving Freight

The Mercer Corridor is an important link in the freight network, connecting I-5 to commercial and industrial areas in Interbay, Ballard and Fremont. Two-way Mercer will improve this connection by reducing the number of turns required to navigate through the South Lake Union neighborhood, and by minimizing weaving conflicts for all traffic exiting I-5.

A key design issue for freight is at the intersection Mercer Street and Ninth Avenue North, where trucks will turn north from Mercer to travel toward Fremont and Ballard. SDOT sponsored a Truck Rodeo to test the proposed design. The test confirmed that this intersection will work well for trucks, while maintaining overall safety for pedestrians, bicycles and other vehicles.

Urban Design

The City has held four public Urban Design workshops, two in 2005, one in 2006, and one in 2007. The Urban Design components of the project will continue to take shape in 2007 and 2008, as the project moves forward with final design.
