The Rainier Corridor Traffic Safety Project

On November 8, 2005 the Rainier Task Force toured the corridor so that possible safety hazards could be viewed and discussed first hand. The following is a sample of problems identified:

Genesse Intersection
- Drivers are hitting private property
- Four parking spaces in area cause collisions

Martin Luther King Intersection
-There is a pedestrian overcrossing, but it is not commonly used

McClellan Intersection
- Driveway accidents are a concern as people enter and exit the shopping center
- There are plans to redevelop the shopping center

Hudson Intersection
- Key pedestrian zone with the highest number of pedestrian collisions (20% occur in Columbia City)

Othello Intersection
- Several parked car accidents occur in this area
- No provisions for left hand turns
- The housing development being constructed will increase the number of pedestrians in the area

Henderson Intersection
- Merge lane transition is poor--too short
- Crosswalks at end of the corridor are dangerous
- Tight turns (sharp curbs) require automobiles to slow way down

Below are photos taken during the bus tour.
