Creating Safe Routes to School is an important piece of the Bridging the Gap Transportation levy. The SDOT Safe Routes to School Program has three elements: the Annual Program, the Focus School Program, and the Mini-Grant Program. The Annual Program is based upon SDOT’s ongoing efforts to improve safety around all schools. This work includes school zone signing, crosswalk installation and maintenance, changes to traffic circulation around schools, and school walking route maps. We encourage parents, students, and community members to engage their local schools directly in making changes. Contact information for public schools can be found online at: http://www.seattleschools.org/area/m_schools/index.dxml SDOT’s Focus School Program seeks to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety around schools. Focus Schools receive up to $70,000 for major infrastructure improvements such as new sidewalks as well as increased education, encouragement, and enforcement efforts. Parents, staff and community members play a key part in a successful program. Three to five schools will be selected as Focus Schools each year.
