Spokane Street Viaduct Widening Project

Closures to the lower roadway of South Spokane Street will occur during certain portions of this project, requiring detours for through traffic. Below find the:

  • Dates and location of closures
  • Recommended detour route
  • Alternate routes into downtown or southbound from West Seattle

East Marginal Way to 1st Ave S

Mid-year 2009 to mid-year 2011

Westbound Lower Spokane

6th Ave S to 1st Ave S

Early 2010 to mid-year 2011

Westbound Lower Spokane

1st Ave S to E. Marginal Way S

Mid-year 2009 (permanently)

Existing Westbound Off-Ramp to 4 th Ave S

 

Early 2010 (permanently)

Existing Westbound On-Ramp from 1 st Ave S

 

 

Extended lane closures are NOT expected for the upper roadway (i.e., on the Spokane Street Viaduct itself).

Current Signed Detour route: Spokane eastbound detour

For through traffic from East Marginal Way toward I-5:

  • North on EAST MARGINAL to HANFORD,
  • East on HANFORD to 1 ST,
  • North on 1st to LANDER,
  • East on LANDER to 6th, and
  • South on 6th to return to the SPOKANE STREET lower roadway

These streets will all be operating normally, in two directions. Signals along these routes may be adjusted to reduce congestion, but greater congestion and slower transit times should be expected.

The same detour, in the reverse direction, will also be used during westbound street closures. Pedestrian access on South Spokane Street and local business access will be maintained by the contractor.

Alternate Routes:

Alternate routes for commuters from West Seattle into downtown include:

  • North on SR-99 to downtown exits at Seneca and Western Ave.
  • North on East Marginal Way S/Alaskan Way S to Atlantic, Royal Brougham, King, Main, Yesler.
  • Stay on the Spokane Street Viaduct to I-5, then North on I-5 to downtown exits.

Alternate routes for commuters from West Seattle southbound include:

  • South on East Marginal Way to Michigan, east to I-5
  • South on East Marginal Way to 1 st Avenue S Bridge, connect to I-509
  • South on East Marginal to Lucille, East to 1st or 4 th or Airport Way, north or south on any of those arterials
