Mayor's South Lake Union Action Agenda

Developing Design Guidelines - What's Happening?

Part of Mayor's Action Agenda for South Lake Union

In March 2003 Mayor Greg Nickels launched his South Lake Union Action Agenda to create thousands of jobs and fuel growth in the city's economy.

The action agenda will:

  • Attract biotechnology jobs
  • Improve the Mercer Corridor
  • Build a new streetcar
  • Create a new waterfront park
  • Build infrastructure
  • Improve neighborhood amenities

"There has never been a better time to seize the moment in South Lake Union...We're also working to create new open space and improve transportation and neighborhood amenities."
Mayor Greg Nickels

Terry Avenue North is Changing - Developing Design Guidelines

Part of improving neighborhood amenities is saving and enhancing what's best about Terry Avenue North - its unique character and views of Lake Union.

Terry Avenue North is changing. Design guidelines are needed to allow the streetscape to adapt to a mix of uses - pedestrians, cyclists, cars, trucks, and potentially a streetcar. These guidelines will detail improvements to Terry Avenue North as development occurs. Current ideas include designing a "curbless" street, similar to areas of Portland's Pearl District.

Seattle Department of Transportation has hired Weinstein A|U to generate the Terry Avenue Master Plan. Consultants with expertise in public involvement, civil engineering, and landscape design are also on the team.

What We Heard During Public Outreach

  • Draw from the historic character of Terry Avenue North
  • Improve safety and lighting
  • Integrate industrial uses with new development
  • Make the street more pedestrian friendly

The Guidelines are Nearly Ready

The guidelines are in final draft and are beginning the two week public comment period that is required prior to a Joint Directors Rule that will adopt them to the City's Street Design Manual.

Written comments on the proposed adoption may be submitted through May 6, 2005. Comments may be sent to:
