West Thomas Street Overpass

Updated October 22, 2007

Project Status:

The project team had been looking at several potential alignment alternatives during the year and made a recommendation to the SDOT Director that would maintain project costs within the current CIP funding. At the end of September 2007 the project team was given the go ahead to proceed with initial design of the recommended project alignment. This alignment includes a pedestrian/bicycle trail crossing over Elliott Avenue W and the BNSF railroad tracks into Mrytle Edwards Park passing near the Heizer Sculpture. The structure's western access ramp would touch down at the mound in Mrytle Edwards Park.

Proposed bridge type:

  • One three span, 384-ft long by 10-ft wide, concrete I-girder pedestrian bridge with standard rail and lighting
  • One 425-ft long by 10-ft wide, elevated pedestrian ramp structure at the bridge west access
  • One 190-ft long by 10-ft wide, elevated pedestrian ramp structure at the bridge east access

Anticipated project milestones are as follows:

30% design - 3/08

60% design - 5/08

90% design - 7/08
