Cedar River Watershed

The Cedar River Municipal Watershed is carefully managed to supply clean drinking water to 1.4 million people in the greater Seattle area. The watershed covers 90,638 acres and is owned by the City of Seattle. Come explore and learn about this remarkable rain-soaked landscape by visiting the Cedar River Watershed Education Center or attending a tour.

The Cedar River Watershed is host to a rich biological diversity of plants, animals, and habitats. Learn more about the watershed's
biodiversity and how it is being protected and restored by the City under its Habitat Conservation Plan.

Watershed activities and additional information

  • Wondering About Wildlife - Friday, January 2, 2009 -10 am to 4 pm. Come celebrate the 8th annual family Wondering About Wildlife day focusing on the winter wildlife of the Cedar River Watershed. Center naturalists offer, special all age programs, guided walks, hands-on activities and refreshments. Don’t miss this great family activity during the holiday winter break. Parents must accompany children. For Information call, (206) 733-9421.

  • • Spring 2009 school programs registration began 8:00 AM, Monday, January 5. For information call our Watershed Program Information line at (206) 233-1515 to discuss spring dates and programs. (Be advised Fall 2008 programs are full but we have active a wait list.)

  • • Learn about the history of the watershed.

  • • See the natural beauty of the watershed by taking our virtual tour.

  • • Lean how Seattle Public Utilities manages our clean drinking water supply and treatment at Cedar River.

  • • Apply for a watershed permit online (only available for authorized activities).
