Tour Your Utilities Bill

    1. Account Number. Your account number is a unique combination of numbers designating utility, customer and service address.
    0 - 100000000* - 1000000(utility #)
(customer # - as many as 9 digits)
(service # - as many as 7 digits)
    * Single-family residences will likely have the same customer number for both Seattle Public Utilities and Seattle City Light.

    2. Account Name. If you are both a Seattle Public Utilities and Seattle City Light customer, your bill may reflect our effort to make the name consistent for both utilities.
    3. How to contact us.
    4. Amount Due. You can quickly find how much is owed and when it is due.
    5. Messages. Look for messages about your current billing statement or utility activities that may affect you.
    6. Expanded Usage Graph. You will have up to 13 months of consumption history. History will be shown in CCF (CCf = 100 cubic feet) and in gallons (1 CCF = 748 gal).
    7. Return Mail Address and Zip Code.
    8. Detailed Billing Information. There is a separate detailed billing for Water, Sewer and Solid Waste Services. This includes:
    • • Meter information including meter numbers and previous/current readings.
    • • Seasonal rate classifications: winter residential inside city is the rate charged for water consumption per month.

(Customers living outside Seattle city limits will see rate for winter residential outside city.) Under summer residential, the first 5 ccfs of water used are charged at a lower rate, and any water usage over 5 ccfs are charged at a higher rate per ccf per month. Base service charge covers costs for basic services. It is calculated by multiplying the number of days between the previous and current reading times a flat daily charge based on the size of your meter. The base service charge does not change with seasonal rates.

Water revenues pay the following costs:
    • • 38% for water quality and supply. This revenue includes capital and operating costs of the Cedar and Tolt River watersheds and dams, and the water purification facilities.
    • • 28% for infrastructure and maintenance. This revenue includes capital and operating cost of the large transmission pipes that bring water to Seattle and the thousands of miles of pipes that deliver water to each home and building. This revenue also goes toward maintaining and refurbishing reservoirs, water towers and pump stations.
    • • 12% for services, billing and emergency response. This revenue includes planning and preparations for emergencies such as earthquakes and landslides, as well as, meter reading, billing and customer service.
    • • 11% for taxes. This revenue includes all applicable state and local business taxes.
    • • 5% for administration. This revenue includes all general overhead such as human resources, safety, finance and administration.
    • • 4% for environmental investments. This revenue includes water conservation programs plus all federally mandated Endangered Species Act requirements for endangered salmon. This revenue also involves implementation of the Habitat Conservation Plan for the 95,000 acre Cedar River Watershed Ecological Reserve.
    • • 2% for the Revenue Stabilization Fund. This fund was created following the 2001 drought to help maintain financial protection against unforeseen and extraordinary weather events.
    9. Solid Waste Services. Recycling service shows on your new bill. It continues to be a service provided at no charge to City of Seattle customers.
    10. Other Charges. Charges such as extra garbage, a utility meter reading, meter obstructed, and late fees.
