Where to Dispose of Hazardous Waste
SPU has two Household Hazardous Waste Facilities:
You can bring hazardous household materials and products such as fluorescent light bulbs and tubes, oil-based paint and cleaning products to the Household Hazardous Waste Facilities for disposal. There is no fee. Commercial or business waste is NOT accepted.
North Household Hazardous Waste Facility
Beginning May 2008, as part of a pilot project, no appointment is required. The North Hazardous Waste Facility is located at 12550 Stone Avenue North. (directions below). The North facility is open Sunday, Monday and Tuesday from 9:30 AM – 4:30PM. The North Recycling and Disposal station (located in the Fremont/Wallingford area at 1350 North 34th Street) will NOT accept Household Hazardous Waste
- • Southbound Directions
-- Heading south on Aurora Avenue North, turn left on North 125th Street. Turn left on Stone Avenue North. Travel approximately 0.5 block and the facility is on your right.
-- Heading south on I-5 take the 145th Street exit and head westbound. Turn left (south) on Aurora Avenue North. Turn left on North 125th Street. Turn left on Stone Avenue North. Travel approximately 0.5 block and the facility is on your right.
- • Northbound Directions
-- Heading north on Aurora Avenue North, take a right on North 125th Street. Turn left on Stone Avenue North. The facility is approximately 0.5 block on your right.
-- Heading north on I-5 take the 130th Street exit and head west. Turn left on Aurora Avenue North. Turn left on North 125th Street. Turn left on Stone Avenue North. Travel approximately 0.5 block and the facility is on your right.
South Household Hazardous Waste Facility
No appointments are necessary. The South Hazardous Waste Facility is located at the South Recycling and Disposal Station (8105 Fifth Avenue South, directions below). The South Hazardous Waste Facility is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9:30 AM – 4:30 PM.The Household Hazardous Waste Facilities are closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day.
Other Options
- • Many retail locations accept used motor oil, vehicle batteries, nickel-cadmium batteries, and latex paint. Check with the business where you bought the product to see if they dispose of it.
- • Call the Seattle- King County Health Department Hazards Line at (206) 296-4692 for information about disposal options and safer alternatives to hazardous products.
- • Visit the King County "Wastemobile" at different locations outside of Seattle in King County and suburban cities, or the Bellevue-Factoria hazardous waste storage locker.
Small Business Hazardous Waste Disposal Pilot Project
In 2008, qualifying small businesses may use household hazardous waste disposal facilities for limited amounts of hazardous waste – at no extra cost. Please see details at the Local Hazardous Waste Management Program web site.
